With funds becoming increasingly difficult to raise and
experienced homes even more difficult to find, some dogs,
i.e. elderly/unsocialised, have had to wait longer than
normal to come into care.
In the past, we would have been readily able to
accept these dogs into Welfare and keep them until a home
is found. We
do not have a sanctuary of our own so we must use
approved boarding kennels and rely on the goodwill of
their owners.
When a dog, that will be difficult to home, is accepted
into Welfare, it can soon become a severe drain on funds,
especially during the winter months when fund raising is
at its lowest.
Welfare has never euthanized dog because it
has outstayed its welcome or because of its age.
Our only reasons for destroying a dog are:
- Severe
health problems that cannot be treated and mean that a
dog will suffer unnecessary pain (carried out on vets
advice only)
- A
dogs temperament is such that to re-home it would be
dangerous to the public or become detrimental to the
breed
We do not wish to add, “We can’t afford it”.
By joining the Share & Care Scheme and donating a
fixed amount each month or quarter, funds will always be
available for dogs that find themselves in Welfare with no
prospect of a safe and permanent home in the near future.
Any dog that needs to come into Welfare that is
elderly, i.e. over 8 years, or has a long term but not
fatal illness, i.e. pancreas problems, can be accepted
onto the Scheme from the start.
Any dog that is cared for through the main RWA fund or Sponsorship
Scheme will be transferred to the Share and Care Scheme if they
are still with us after 3 months, provided we have enough sponsors.
It is hoped that every dog that comes into Welfare will
find a safe and permanent home but if they do not, your
contribution means that they will be provided safe and
permanent care throughout their stay with us ‘however
long it is’. Even though they will be on this scheme
this does not mean that we stopped looking for that
right home, it just sometimes takes a bit longer.
Every effort will be made to make the
dog happier in its environment, i.e., maybe a change of
routine, different kennels, living quarters or visits
from its sponsors for days out could help.
f a dog is not happy in kennels, and by this we do not
mean ‘fed up’, but is unhappy to the point of self
mutilation, pacing and unpredictable behaviour, we would
have to consider the inevitable, but a dog will only ever be
euthanized as a last resort.
All Scheme supporters will get an initial report on
their 'chosen' dog and updates on the Scheme will appear in
the Yearbook. If you wish
to care for a specific dog and it no longer required care through
the Scheme, you will have the choice of funding another dog/dogs
or discontinuing your payments.
Should you not wish to commit yourself to long
term financial help but would still like to help a specific dog,
our Sponsorship Scheme is still running.
If large amounts of money are raised by this
Scheme, but the amount of "long term" residents lessens,
we reserve the right to transfer "Emergency Funding" to
the Sponsorship Scheme. This money will only be used for
emergency vet treatment of kennel facilities and shall never
exceed 20% of the total fund assets. By operating in this
way, we hope that no dog shall ever have to wait for care.
